I'm going to Toronto - tips please!

I don't really mention my day job much on my blog, but today it's given me a reason for a whole post!  I'm going to Canada for 6 nights in early February for my work, which is a pretty amazing opportunity.  I've never been to Canada before, and it's quite short notice that I'm going, so I don't really have much time for researching or planning where to go and what to see, so I'm hoping someone might have a few tips for me.

As I said I'm going for work, but I think we will be seeing a bit of Toronto while we're there and may have a few free evenings and the weekend to take in a few touristy things.  I think we'll be going to see Niagra Falls (I'm very scared of just how freezing cold and possibly wet that day trip might be) and possibly for dinner at the CN Tower, but other than that I'm not sure.  Oh of course I'll be scoffing some pancakes with Canadian maple syrup!

We'll be staying fairly central at the Fairmont Royal York hotel and I've already sussed out that it's connected to miles and miles of underground shopping!  Of course the first thing I did was locate a Sephora, and there seems to be one not too far from where I'll be at a mall called the Eaton Centre.

If any of you guys live in Toronto or have been there I'd love to hear any tips you have about where to eat and shop and things to do.  I'm expecting to be able to buy a lot of the same products I look for when I'm in the USA, but I'm not sure.  What's a good drugstore to visit in Toronto?  Is there Walgreens or CVS or do they have something similar?  Are any beauty brands particularly cheap to pick up in Canada?

Any tips will be a huge help!  I'm hoping I might be able to do a good bit of shopping for some makeup, nail polish, candles and American / Canadian snacks.  If the shopping is good I'm planning to pick up some bits for a giveaway too :)

Please leave me any tips you have in the comments. Thank you!

Keep up to date with all things flutter and sparkle in any of the following ways -

  1. I tweeted you about the CN Tower just but wanted to comment and say hope you have an amazing time. One day I will move to Canada for good :)

  2. wow what an amazing opportunity! i have been to toronto, went when i was younger, you have to go up the CN tower and of course go and see niagara falls, if you can! cananda do the best donuts too, you have to go to tim hortons! enjoy yourself, i would love to go back to canada again, best holiday ever!

    1. Now you mention it I've heard people raving about Tim Hortons before. Thank you :)

  4. Yes i agree. The CN tower.Have a photo with the Toronto police (you won't miss them in the uniforms lol).Oh and you HAVE to have a hot chocolate at TIM HORTONS :)

  5. Definitely go to Eaton Centre - that's the one located downtown and pretty much every store is there, they just redid the Sephora in there and its HUGEEEE, could definitely spend hoursss there! For drugstore makeup, we don't have CVS or Walgreens but have a drugstore chain called Shoppers Drug Mart - theres also one inside the Eaton Centre. Shoppers carries brands like L'oreal, Maybelline, Essense, Rimmel, QUO, Bioderma, La Roche Posay, Vichy, and more high end companies like Lise Waiter, Lancome, Benefit, etc. Though not all have the high end ones, but I'm pretty sure every shoppers carries La Roche Posay, Bioderma, QUO, Vichy and the drugstore companies if you're looking for specific products.

Definitely do the CN Tower - also recommend you go to the second level too (theres two levels - the first level is where the restaurant is and the glass floor - the second level takes you higher and much smaller but you get a great view) , the restaurant up there I've heard is nice but only been there for a private event so never tried the actual regular menu. Also b/c you're going on February - try to go on a day where its sunny or at least not foggy b/c the view is great!

For food, theres some places around the Eaton Centre that are popular like Jack Astors and Milestones. You should try Yorkville area too (Bloor and Yonge - its downtown a little north of Eaton Centre) - nice shopping (although very high end -stores like Chanel, Tiffany's, Gucci, etc but there is a nice Sephora and MAC there too), nice food (have variety of places from affordable to more expensive) and overall good to walk around that area when its a nice day.

King St. East is also popular for the restaurants they have there - its not too far from Fairmount - but you can always ask your hotel for directions.

Some of my favourite places to go include Earls (King St.), Jack Astors (multiple locations), Red Lobster (seafood - one right across the Eaton centre), Pizzeria Libretto (Great pizza but its in Greektown).

If you go to Niagara Falls and want to do some shopping they have a small outlet mall but it doesnt have that many stores - it has Coach, Tommy, Guess, i think Nike, cant't remember it all

Downtown Niagara Falls is really nice too but only been there in the summer so not sure how it is in the winter (but its walking distance from the actual falls - about like 2 min drive tho)

Hope you have a good time!

    1. Sorry I made a mistake above - King St. *West* is popular for food - a lot of nice restaurant, lounges. Plus nice clubs there too if you're going out for a drink when you're here :)

    2. Thank you so much for taking the time to leave me so many tips - I'm making a note of them all! The drugstore info is particularly useful so I know which store to look out for. Thanks again :)

    3. If you want to check out high end makeup like Chanel, YSL, etc. you can find those at the Bay (theres one at the eaton centre) or Holt Renfrew (Bloor and Yonge) - Both stores are department stores so you'll find everything in there but Holt Renfrew is more high end while in the Bay you'll find an array of brands from affordable to more expense!

  6. Have fun :) We're waiting for some photos from your trip

  7. Wow im so jealous! What do you do for your work?

    1. Nothing too exciting! I work in Financial Services :)

  9. There are two main drugstores in Canada: London Drugs and Shoppers Drug Mart. I definitely recommend checking out Shoppers because they always have the best sales, literally everything will be marked down a few dollars off :).
I also recommend going to a Tim Hortons, you will find the cheapest and yummiest mini donuts (tim-bits) there ;D. Hope you have an awesome trip! :)

  10. So I'm from Toronto and I could really give you some good tips where to go. Yes, you should definatly visit Eaton Centre. Sephora at Eaton's is now much more beautiful then it was before with their renovations and they carry a lot more beauty brands i.e. Shu uemura. Another place you might like to shop is on Bloor Street.
Now places to explore is The Distillery District (place I liked to go was the Soma Chocolatemaker), Toronto Islands, Kensington Market (there is a whole bunch of cool shops on that street but don't go late in the day).
P.S. there are a lot of good sushi places, in my opinion. But that's if you like sushi.
You can get a day pass for the subway and go around and around.
Hope you have a fantastic trip!
