My 2016 beauty favourites

Happy New Year!  I've had a lovely little break over Christmas and hope you did too.  Now I know I rarely do favourites posts, but as we've just started a new year, I felt like looking back on what I'd enjoyed in 2016.  The year that gave us Brexit and Trump at least had a few great new beauty products!

Kicking off with an old favourite and much trusted antidote to my oily eyelids, the Nars Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base is still my go to eyeshadow base for keeping colour in place all day long.  Also a favourite because it doesn't budge from my lids in the Kat Von D Tattoo Liner - I've been buying this from the states for years but finally we can now get it in Debenhams!  I have two favourite mascaras this year and can't choose between them which I've used more - they're the Too Faced Better Than Sex  and also the YSL False Lash Effect - both are brilliant for creating volume and length for my stumpy little lashes.

2016 has really been the year of he highlight for me - I've really gotten into it properly and have been loving trying lots of different brands and levels of glow.  My favourites have been the Anastasia Beverly Hills Glow Kits - they really take glow to the next level but without any nasty glitter bits, just a really smooth gleam.  To go with the glow on my face I've been really loving a bronze eye and my most used shade by far is pure ganache from the Zoeva Cocoa Blend Palette.  It's come to the point where I feel I really do need to get a new look, but I think I'll still indulge my brown crease and bronze lid combo now and again this year... just not every day!

For skincare I've been relying on La Roche-Posay Cicaplast to deal with dry and dehydrated skin.  I use this daily on dry areas and I always have a least two tubes of this on the go!  For nighttime skincare Sunday Riley Luna is my favourite night oil - I stopped using it for six weeks while I trialled something else and that's when I realised just how good it was as my skin started to take a backwards step.  For me this helps give my skin a more even tone, reduces those little under the skin bumps and make my large pores less noticeable.  Another product that I skipped during that six weeks and couldn't wait to pick up again was the Filorga Optim-Eyes eye cream - this stuff works wonders on dark circles and I'm pretty sure it's kept new wrinkles at bay for me too.  Also for nighttime skincare I loved using the Marks and Spencer Formula Absolute Ultimate Sleep Cream - you really notice the difference in your skin the next morning after using this and it's wonderfully hydrating.  I need to get myself a new jar of this asap.

I discovered It Cosmetics in 2016 and my two favourite products were Bye Bye Redness, which does exactly what it says on the jar and does it very well on my ridiculously red cheeks, and also the Heavenly Luxe Blush Brush which is the perfect, versatile face brush.  I decided to allow myself to pick just one lip product (else we'd have been here all night) and although there were many contenders including some of the Charlotte Tilbury Hot Lips collection and my favourite Colour Pop Ultra Satin Lips, my truly most worn lip product this year has been the Too Faced Melted Matte liquid lipstick in the shade Queen B.  It's that kind of taupey-dusky-pink-nude that I own hundreds of dupes for, but this one also has a perfect comfortable formula that lasts for hours.

My favourite perfumes this year were definitely Jo Malone - I added a few more of the mini sizes to my growing collection, and from the amounts left in the bottles it was easy to see that my most spritzed scents were Mimosa & Cardamom and Blue Agava & Cacao.  I love these two and would consider splurging on the large sizes when I'm feeling flush (and in duty free probably!).

Lastly back to a couple of favourite base products.  No matter which foundation I've used throughout the year, the Real Techniques complexion sponge has been my application tool of choice.  I use these damp and they make blending a breeze.  If something goes wrong with my foundation though - usually that I've applied too much, or caked on too much powder - Mac Fix + always has my back.  I used to think this was just water in a bottle (and it probably is, albeit fancy water) but it really has a knack of helping my makeup mesh into my skin and look more natural, and I've not found any cheaper versions that do the job as well.

What was your favourite beauty product of 2016?
