Beauty: New Revlon lacquer balms review and swatches

Back when they first landed, everyone was obsessed with Revlon’s Just Bitten Kissable lip stains (as they were then called) – almost as much as the lip butters.  I ended up with quite the collection and bought all of the colours I liked and thought it was a shame they didn’t bring out a few more.  Well, now they have - they're renamed as colorburst balms, and they’re not just new colours but new textures too....

The new Colorburst balms come in a wide range of really pretty colours and two finishes – lacquer or matte – with lacquer being a semi-sheer glossy finish and matte giving a full coverage, bold matte lip look.

I’ve heard that these exciting new arrivals will be landing at Boots on 22 January, but being the ever impatient type, I couldn’t wait to give them a go.  When my Mum went to New York I gave her a special mission to find them and I picked out three matte and three lacquer balms to try (greedy?  Who, me?).  Mum couldn’t find the matte balms anywhere, but Duane Reade had the lacquer balms and here they are in all their shiny shiny glory :)

Left to right these are provocateur, vivacious and coquette.

The packaging is just like the original JBK lip stains, but I think it’s much prettier in this shiny version.  The formula’s pretty similar too – the big crayon type nib glides on rather easily and gives a wash of semi-opaque colour which you can build up to a more intense finish.  They’re really comfortable to wear and feel quite moisturising while they’re on the lips and they last a few hours before I need to reapply.

Below I'm wearing Coquette which is a really pretty bright pink.

Having now played with the colours in person I think I picked two which are a little too similar, but they’re still lovely none the less.  I can’t wait to try the matte balms now - there are some gorgeous vibrant colours in the range.  I love standout, shameless and elusive and will be staking out Boots.com on 22 January!

  1. I love the look of these!! A pity they're all a bit similar, but hopefully they'll be a good shade range when they launch here x
